Maverick is a submergible robotic system that has proven in recent inspections that it can safely and successfully perform remote internal inspections of full aboveground storage tanks. Developed by Solex Robotics and the Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, Maverick will greatly reduce the hazards to workers and decrease costs and environmental problems associated with inspecting AST's.
The robot is lowered into a full AST, where it uses specialized sensors and imaging systems to inspect the welded steel bottoms for signs of thinning or leaking, while being operated remotely by technicians outside of the tank. The robot includes a multi-channel ultrasonic sensor array to map and correlate metal thickness data, an onboard video system to record inspections, and a sonar positioning system to track movement within the tank.
Maverick was designed with a safety first policy. It is engineered for operations in tanks containing hazardous and non-hazardous materials, and has passed the rigorous requirements for Class I, Division 1, Group D environments.
